Privacy policy
Last updated: 30 October 2026
In short: everything the extension records or creates stays on your computer. It sends nothing to us or anyone else. There are no accounts, no analytics and no advertising.
What the extension stores, and where
All of the following is stored only in your browser's storage for this extension, on your device:
- Recordings: the video of the tab, window or screen you chose to record, and, if you turned them on, your camera and microphone as separate tracks.
- Interaction data for automatic zoom and click effects, captured only in the tab you are recording and only while recording: pointer position, clicks and drags, scrolling, the page size, and keyboard shortcuts (such as Ctrl+C or Enter). Typed text is never captured, and nothing at all is captured from password, one-time-code or payment-card fields.
- Your edits: cuts, zooms, background, layout and other settings for each recording, plus any background image you upload.
- Exported videos, until you save them elsewhere or export again.
- Preferences: your last choice of recording source, camera, microphone and theme.
What leaves your device
Nothing. The extension makes no network requests with your data. When you click Download, the video is saved to the place you choose on your computer. If you share that file, that's your choice and outside the extension.
Permissions, and why they are needed
| Permission | Used for |
|---|---|
| activeTab, scripting | Showing the recorder on the page you are on when you click the icon or press the shortcut, and capturing interactions in the tab you record. Nothing runs on pages you haven't chosen. |
| tabCapture | Recording the tab you chose. |
| offscreen | Keeping a tab recording running in the background. |
| storage, unlimitedStorage | Saving recordings, edits and preferences on your device; recordings can be large. |
| contextMenus | A "My recordings" item when you right-click the toolbar icon. |
| Access to a site, or to all sites (optional, asked for) | The first time you record a tab on a website, Chrome asks whether Reframe may access that site; you can say no, and turn the question off in the recorder's options. You can also allow all sites at once. While you record, this lets the recorder keep noting clicks and shortcuts in the recorded tab when it opens another page. Nothing else is read, and nothing leaves your device. |
| Camera and microphone (asked by Chrome) | Only if you choose a camera or microphone, and only while recording. |
Deleting your data
Delete any recording from the extension's Recordings page; its video, edits and exports are removed. Uninstalling the extension removes everything it stored.
This website
This website has no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and loads nothing from other companies. It is hosted on GitHub Pages, which, like any web host, receives your IP address to deliver the pages (see GitHub’s privacy statement). The free tools (video to GIF, video compressor, screenshot beautifier) work entirely in your browser: the files you choose are never uploaded.
If you use the contact form, your email address, topic and message are sent to our server (on Hostinger, our web host) and on to our inbox as an email. We use them only to reply, and keep the email only as long as needed to help you. To stop spam, the server keeps a one-way hash of your IP address for one hour, and nothing else.
Buying Reframe Pro
Pro is sold through Lemon Squeezy, our reseller and merchant of record. When you buy, Lemon Squeezy collects your name, email address, billing country and payment details to process the order, underits privacy policy. We receive your name, email address and order details, never your card number, and use them only to provide your licence and support.
When you activate Pro in the extension, it sends your licence key and a random name for this computer to Lemon Squeezy, to check the key and count it against your 3-computer limit. Nothing about your recordings is ever sent.
Children
The extension is not directed at children and collects no personal information from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published here with a new date. Any change that would send data off your device would be described here first and would require your consent.
